Transnational Terrorism: An Economic Analysis by
نویسندگان
چکیده
Both theoretical and empirical techniques are used to put modern-day terrorism into perspective. This paper surveys past contributions, presents updated empirical findings, and suggests new directions for research. Because of strategic interactions among terrorists and targeted government, game theory and economic methods play an important role in identifying novel policy recommendations and behavioral insights. Transnational terrorism and efforts to curtail it involves externalities and market failures. The paper analyzes how terrorists alter tactics in reaction to government policies and how a no-negotiation hostage policy is difficult to institute. Are Economic Development and Education Improvement Associated with Participation in Transnational Terrorism?
Using transnational terrorism data from 1980 to 2000, this study empirically examines the relationships between frequency of participation in transnational terrorism acts and economic development and education improvement. We find an inverse U-shaped association between the frequency of various nationals acting as perpetrators in transnational terrorism acts and per capita income in their respe...

متن کاملWorking Paper No. 03-04-02 An economic perspective on transnational terrorism
This paper indicates how economic analysis can be applied for enlightened policy making with respect to transnational terrorism. Both theoretical tools (e.g., game theory and utilitymaximizing models) and empirical techniques (e.g., time series and spectral analysis) are used to put modern-day terrorism into perspective and to suggest policy responses. From hostage negotiations to the installat...
متن کاملThe Impact of Terrorism and Conflicts on Growth in Asia
This paper quantifies the impact of terrorism and conflicts on income per capita growth in Asia for 1970-2004. Our panel estimations show that transnational terrorist attacks had a significant growth-limiting effect. An additional terrorist incident per million persons reduces GDP per capita growth by about 1.5 percent. In populous countries, many additional attacks are needed to achieve such a...
متن کاملA strategic analysis of the war against transnational terrorism
We study a two stage game in which a transnational terrorist organization interacts with an arbitrary number of countries that may differ in their political or economic power, their military effectiveness, the benefit from cooperating against terrorism and the value they assign to damage. Only a subset of countries that emerges endogenously takes proactive measures to fight the terrorist, while...
